As Executive Director, you will drive the Hurston/Wright Foundation’s mission to discover, mentor, and honor Black writers by providing overall strategic and operational direction to ensure that the Foundation’s programs, fundraising and operations are effectively implemented, as evidenced through increased program participation and increased funding.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Provides thought leadership for the Foundation by devising and implementing a strategic plan that defines operational goals, key performance metrics and funding targets in order to foster a dynamic literary community.
Partnership Development & Fundraising
- Advocates and generates visibility and support for the mission, vision and goals of the Foundation and its community.
- Identifies, develops, and maintains relationships with a diverse group of key stakeholders, local and national funders, partners, and community liaisons.
- Drives the Foundation’s overall fundraising strategy by developing and executing strategies that ensure a sustainable and diverse funding stream and effectively leverage the expertise and contacts of the Board.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Operations
- Provides leadership and oversight to the Foundation’s management, programs, and operations.
- Works closely with assistants, consultants and board members to ensure continuous improvement and quality assurance across the organization.
- Works with assistants to develop the Foundation’s infrastructure, systems, and processes.
- Develops a culture of excellence, performance, and accountability.
- Provides strategic oversight of the Foundation’s annual budget and works with the treasurer to prepare financial reporting to the Board.
Board Engagement
- Collaborates with the Board to ensure execution of organizational strategy.
- Develops and presents to the Board strategic and operational plans with measurable goals.
- Works closely with the Board of Directors to leverage the skills and influence of the Board to assist in Board development and fundraising efforts.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages board members and consultants responsible for Finance, Administration, Operations, Programs, Communications and Marketing. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Foundation’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in arts management, business, literature, or related discipline and ten (10) years related experience in a non-profit, public, or literary environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience must include developing fundraising campaigns and events and identifying corporate and individual donors. Superb writing, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to speak in public forums to diverse audiences, and communicate effectively with stakeholders, and colleagues. Successful track record of engaging, collaborating, and building relationships to achieve meaningful results and serve future generations of writers and readers. Excellence in organizational management with the ability to develop high-performing teams, create a positive working environment, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget. Experience working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
Salary
This is a part-time consulting opportunity with compensation up to $60,000.
